History of Ho Con Rua, the location of this lake used to be the location of Kham Khuyet gate of Bat Quai citadel, later named Vong Khuyet by King Minh Mang. In 1837, Bat Quai fortress was destroyed and Phung fortress was rebuilt on a smaller scale.
After the French captured Phung city, they destroyed it and renamed it Gia Dinh, and reorganized the entire city. In 1878, the French built a water tower to provide water for the local people. This tower was demolished in 1921.
Since then, this place has developed into the street it is today and is called Freedom Fighters Square. Shortly after the French left Vietnam, Ho Con Rua was built according to Nguyen Ky’s design. The construction date of the lake is unclear. Some documents say it was built in 1965, while others say it was built in 1967.
Why is it called Ho Con Rua? People know this name because of the shape of the lake, including a 100m diameter road circle and a square fountain decorated with green trees. Four winding roads wind around and lead to the monument, which has a turtle supported on the back of a large stone stele.
